چکیده

Three-dimensional instability of axisymmetric flow in a rotating disk–cylinder configuration is studied numerically for the case of low cylinders with the height/radius aspect ratio varying between 1 and 0.1. A complete stability diagram for the transition from steady axisymmetric to oscillatory threedimensional flow regime is reported. A good agreement with the experimental results is obtained. It is shown that the critical azimuthal wavenumber grows with the decrease of the aspect ratio, reaching the value of 19 at the aspect ratio 0.1. It is argued that the observed instability cannot be described as resulting from a boundary layer only. Other reasons that can destabilize the flow are discussed.

Experimental and numerical results on three-dimensional instabilities in a rotating disk–tall cylinder flow

The three-dimensional axisymmetry-breaking instability of axisymmetric flow between a rotating lid and a stationary cylinder is analyzed both numerically and experimentally for the case of tall cylinders with the height/radius aspect ratio between 3.3 and 5.5. A complete stability diagram for the primary three-dimensional instability is obtained experimentally and computed numerically. The inst...

Boundary Layers and Heat Transfer on a Rotating Rough Disk

The study of flow and heat transfer over rotating circular disks is of great practical importance in understanding the cooling of rotatory machinery such as turbines, electric motors and design and manufacturing of computer disk drives. This paper presents an analysis of the flow and heat transfer over a heated infinite permeable rough disk. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the elliptic Nav...

Parametric instability in a rotating cylinder of gas subject to sinusoidal axial compression. Part 1. Linear theory

An analysis is presented of parametric instability in a finite-length rotating cylinder subject to periodic axial compression by small sinusoidal oscillations of one of its ends (the ‘piston’). The instability is due to resonant interactions between inertialwave (Kelvin) modes of the cylinder and the oscillatory compression and is resisted by viscosity, acting both through thin boundary layers ...

Effect of axial magnetic field on three-dimensional instability of natural convection in a vertical Bridgman growth configuration

A study of the effect of an externally imposed magnetic field on the axisymmetry-breaking instability of an axisymmetric convective flow, associated with crystal growth from bulk of melt, is presented. Convection in a vertical cylinder with a parabolic temperature profile on the sidewall is considered as a representative model. A parametric study of the dependence of the critical Grashof number...

Mechanical Stresses in a Linear Plastic FGM Hollow and Solid Rotational Disk

In this paper, an analytical solution for computing the plastic & linear plastic stresses and critical angular velocity in a FGM hollow & solid rotating disk is developed. It has been assumed that the modulus of elasticity and yield strength were varying through thickness of the FGM material according to a power law relationship. The Poisson's ratio were considered constant throughout the thick...
